Lauri-Anne has certainly come a long way from singing to her teddy bears, the house plants and to anyone who would listen on the public bus and in the byways and highways of her native home Barbados. She has always had an affinity for music, for according to her mother, she started dancing from the time she was a babe in arms - especially to calypso music!
Lauri-Anne’s first public appearance was at the tender age of four, but she credits her performance at the age of nine at The St. Leonard’s Anglican Church Easter Concert as her professional debut. Always one to showcase her lovely voice, Lauri-Anne entered the Richard Stoute Teen Talent Contest at fifteen. Although she did not make it to the finals, she appeared as a guest artiste in the final show. Lauri-Anne went on to enter the Teen Talent Contest for five consecutive years, and true to the old adage “perseverance seldom fails”, she tasted her first success in that competition in 2001 when she placed third in the finals. The following year she won!
Lauri-Anne was chosen to represent Barbados in the Haynes-Smith Talented Teens Pageant in 2001. She was fifth runner-up in that pageant, but the experience gained has served her well. Never one to rest on her laurels, Lauri-Anne made a foray into the world of beauty pageants. She entered the Miss St. Michael Queen Pageant and copped first runner-up. She assumed the role of Queen later that year due to the default of the reigning queen.
As she sought to further her musical career and further develop her voice, Lauri-Anne joined a hotel band called Rush Hour. From there she moved on to another band on the hotel circuit called Frenzy. As opportunities to showcase her voice turned up Lauri-Anne accepted the challenge. She entered the Digicel Rising Stars contest, the Courts Superstar Search - where she gained a spot in the final five- and Scouting for Talent, a Trinidadian competition.
Being comfortable in the light jazz and R&B genres, Lauri-Anne tried her hand at the Soca genre. In 2003, she made her first contribution to the Crop Over Festival by penning and performing a single entitled “Me Nah Easy”. In 2005, her contribution, “Reason for Love” earned a place in the Ragga Soca competition and in 2006, her “Down de Road” composition landed her in the Party Monarch Finals.
Lauri-Anne has just released another single entitled “I’m Walking Out”.
Lauri counts herself very fortunate to be able to count on the love and support of her family at all times. Surrounded by her main motivator, her mother, and the cheering section led by her five siblings, Lauri-Anne feels blessed to know that she can always count on her family to keep her focused and grounded. Her close personal relationship with God is another critical factor in her success.
Lauri-Anne envisages a long and fruitful musical career. She knows that as long as she has The Lord as her co-pilot on this journey nothing will be impossible.
